Updates from the Bane of Mormonism |

Chris and I left Mesa early Saturday the 29th, in a Ryder Truck, pulling our car. Just after Page it began snowing and by the time we were a ways into Utah it got bad. We had to stop in Panguitch and get a motel room. The next morning we heard that three girls were killed ten miles beyond where we stopped on their way back up to BYU. We departed on the now clear roads and arrived in Provo in the late afternoon. We got checked into our apt. and began to unload the essentials. No one helped us. The next day we unloaded the entire truck by ourselves. There was one point where Chris almost dropped her side of our couch on herself while ascending the stairs, struggling for a minute or two to get a better grip. This was witnessed by more than one able bodied man none of which came to help. I have to admit it was a little surprising. Anyway we got into our apt, I got registered for class and things have begun. I want to thank all of you who helped us pack and load our truck on the AZ side. Your help was desperately needed and we appreciate you even more now. Thank you.

do the able bodied men in utah think they still live in the days of strong pioneer women? (not that Chris is weak, but is chivalry dead?) what a bunch of jerks. I wish I could've been there to help. (but thats easy to say from here)
Good Luck in UT! |

Things are still moving. I got a full schedule and a job working at the Media Arts Development Lab on campus. The classes I am taking are
Screen Writing Beginning Editing Art Direction Old Testament Children's Media So far I have only attended the Children's Media class. Which was very interesting despite the fact that the instructor (who I totally loved before) was a little too opinionated to teach at a level of objectiveness that I am comfortable with. Despite that it looks to be a very interesting class. Already we have covered material that has been fodder for hours and hours of Craab discussions. Anyway things are rolling. |

i also have started taking a class at byu. i wanted to take hebrew, but i have to take evening classes in which that particular language is not offered. however, they do offer a welsh language class, which i have been wanting to take for years, so that's what i'm doing. i'm so excited for it. in fact, it starts in 40 min., so i'll talk to you all later.

Things keep going, as you all know. I am loving being in the film life again. One thing I love is the spontaneity of it. A week or two ago I was getting off my shift at the MAD lab when suddenly all the employees were rounded up and herded into a meeting that was already in progress. We quietly shuffled in not knowing what it was all about. A very large man with a cane seemed to be the center of attention. I learned that this was Ira Fulton, a man richer than all of us and our parents put together and close friend of the prophet. He donnated a mass amount of money to the film program so whenever he comes around everyone has to attend. Five or six Yes Men as well as the TMA faculty surrounded him. He had written a book about his life (or paid for a book to be written) as the close friend of the prophet that you can all buy at your local Deseret Book. He was on his way to present a beautifully wood carved Liahona from Micronesia to the prophet, that afternoon and wanted to display it and the affidavits and his book to the faculty. I know that I am sounding negative about the experience but I actually enjoyed it. I know that when everyone bends over backwards for rich people, that annoys me, and I thought the whole thing a bit pretentious, but the Liahona was beautiful and it was cool to think that it would be sitting in the prophets office or home. Later I was asked to work on the Kirtland Visitor Center/Hill Cumorah First Vision remake that was being shot at the LDS MPS, and as I mentioned in the Bug Off thread, I worked with T.C. Christensen, which was so fun. For all my dark talk, I really dig working at the LDS MPS, especially on church shoots. I am learning that there is something truly magical about a film shoot especially one on a set, and I love thinking that I am a helping on what might be the next Mountain of the Lord, the next Labor of Love, the next . . . First Vision.

Chris and I are doing better and better up here. Nothing really new to announce, except I thought I would do an update so you can know what is going down with me and my lady. The Olympics came and went and were were luck enough to go see the torch pass. After the events started we went to the Ice Sculpting Competition that was held in Provo and was free. Unfortunately most of the ice sculptures had already melted a great deal (they had record heat that day). But it was cool to be part and see the awards. The semester recently ended and somehow I pulled off a "B" in Old Testament when I was only asking God for a "C." And man was I asking Him. The new semester has started and I am enjoying my classes. In my film history class I get paid to be the projectionist and in my Advanced Narrative class I am one of two students so it is very casual. I am planning on shooting Prometheus Unbound (My first major production as well as my first color and sound film.) some time this summer. I just rewrote the script and think that it is approaching as "good as it is going to get." I am still working at the Mad Lab and will be a TA this fall for a Narrative Analysis class. Chris is still working from home for Sequoia but she is planning to get an new job by the end of the summer. She is also finishing up those pesky few credits that she needs to graduate through Rio Salado. We were just called to teach Valiant 9 class and we are pretty stoked for that. We have joined a "Intellectual Society" (as one member called it) or a brainstorming group that meets once a week. There we present our ideas and get feedback and suggestions from the group. The group is lead by Brandon Dayton (McTeage) and one of the attendants is his older brother Cameron who married Dixie Shumway a week before Chris and I (they just announced that they are pregnant). It is a pretty sweet meeting to attend and I learn a lot. If I ever (or maybe I should say, "when") I live in Mesa again I am going to try to organize something similar with Craab (if you are interested). It is very inspiring and great creative exercise. In fact a majority of the "society" (which has remained unnamed despite efforts to give it a name) is made up a group very similar to Craab. Only younger (most are fresh from the missions) and where we have more of a artistic/adventure inclination they have more of a musical inclination (not to say they do not have elements of artistic/adventure and we do not have music. When they are together they just pass around the guitar-or "Stick"-and sing songs. It's pretty cool.). Anyway one last anecdote and I am done. My friend Ryan Arvay just got married in the SLC temple, and since he is a convert and his parents could not attend the temple ceremony he asked me to be one of the witnesses. No one else was invited (not even Chris) to honor that Ryan's family could not attend. It was just me, Ryan, his wife Zera, her Step-Dad (who was the other witness) her mom, and the Sealer in a sealing room. It was a beautiful experience and a great honor to be able to be a witness to it. The Salt Lake Temple is so beautiful. Anyway there it is our recent lives all wrapped up nicely in one post.
Kohl PS. Chris and I want you to come up and visit us. |

We just got back from AZ and though it was one of the funnest visits we have ever had, no Craabs were visited except for Josh. I just want to say I am sorry and that I missed you all. Things did not work out and Time was way more limited than I wanted. We are going to be down again around the 24th of July and hopefully we can get together then.

Luckily it was a paid project and with these monies I have recived for my services I will travel with my wife Chris to Mesa this Thursday and stay untill Monday. And then I will go to the Comicon and then I will shoot my movie. But just so you know we will be in Mesa this Friday, Sat, and Sun.

Actors | ||

One of the most transcendent and defining moments in my creative life was when me and Aaron Shoemaker were doing a video test with him in his fireman costume, for my first film. The moment came when, as I peered through the viewfider, I realized that what I was seeing was my storyboard which I had drawn a few nights earlier, made material into reality. I had drawn from reality but this was the first time my drawing became reality. It blew my mind and I knew I had found my calling. Last night we held auditions in SLC for The Promethean. I had another one of those moments (though to a far lesser degree) when actor after actor came in and acted out dialogue that I had written. Each person reading it differently, bringing so many different meanings to the text. They all praised my script, and many tried to dress as they thought the character would dress. I somewhat agree with Hitchock in that actors are cattle. They know what they need to say to survive and land parts. They play games to convince the director they are 100% behind the project. I don't know how that is like cattle but Hitch said it and I agree.

That hitchcock part was funny. Were the acters as diverse as you wanted?

Re: Actors | ||

6 of 7 of the actors were perfect. I couldn't have asked for more.
Today Chris is appearing in her first student film (except the one shot in my film in which she stood in for IO). A few girls in the film program asked her to be in their film. I haven't read the script but it is about a grown brother and sister (Chris) having a conversation in a car. Maybe I should read the script. Anyway it has been kinda weird and amusing since I am not doing anything on the film. It is like our roles have been reversed. I am friends with all the girls, I often talk Smallville with the director, and I think the girl who wrote it is a pretty good writer (except now I am trying to remember what I have read of her's) but they asked Chris to be in it without asking me if she was an actress, if she would want to, when she was available, and stuff. Not that they should have. They all thought it was funny that I came home from school and Chris told me she was going to be in a movie. Usually I am more up on these things. I was going to pretend to be mad but one of the girls caught me off guard when she asked what I thought of it and I had to tell her the truth, that I thought it was cool. Ever since her unemployment Chris has been a little listless. I think getting out and interacting with someone other than me and my puppets is good for her. Plus I think she will do a bang up job. I don't think I will ever cast her in one of my own films however. I don't think directing your own wife is a wholesome practice, but maybe I will change my mind in the future. As for the rest of you. I will extend the promise that I gave to Alison, that you are welcome to be an extra in any of my films that call for extras. "That doll said things NO doll should ever say!"

Re: Actors | ||

well, i did act in that film, and i just saw the footage today. i am much more confident on the stage then on film, and i had to adjust my acting strategies to having the camera in my face and acting more real (since i was not trying to project my emotions to a packed theater), but it was awesome.
i finally got a job. i'm babysitting, which is not what i planned to do with a college degree, but i love it. the kids are half japanese, beautiful, and really fun. an example is the other day, tj (he's 6) was asking me about rattlesnakes and how much it hurt when they bit you. i told him it probably hurt a lot, and plus they were poisonous, so you had to go to a hospital after you were bitten or you would die. he asked me how long it would take you to die after you were bitten, and i said that it depended on where you were bitten. he paused for a moment and then said, "if you were bit in the privates, you'd probably die right away, wouldn't you?" i told him i wasn't sure, but that was probably a pretty good theory. i also watch mandi, who is 4, and kami, who is 10. i really, really love it, and it has gone even further towards convincing me that if kohl and i need to adopt children, i think i want to adopt japanese children. i have also been editing a trilogy of books, as well as casting for some other film students. kohl put his film in the byu film festival, and it won the audience choice award (in a three way tie with two other movies) which is the only award they give. it was really exciting to be there seeing the reactions to his film from the audience. it was also nervewracking. i'm excited to hear what all of you think of it. i think that's all our most recent news. oh, except i still don't like provo, but you saw that one coming, didn't you? |
